What my grandmother's kitchen taught me
Measuring with hands, wasting nothing and feeding whoever turned up.

My grandmother never used a measuring cup. She used her palm, her fingers and a lot of tasting.
Nothing was wasted. Stale roti became a sweet breakfast, vegetable peels went to the goats next door.
“Cook a little more than you need. Someone always comes.”
Most of all, there was always enough for one more person. I am still learning that one.
