A conversation about work and dignity
A made-up interview with a retired schoolteacher about pay, respect and forty years in a classroom.

She taught for forty years in government schools. She is a made-up person in this sample, but her answers draw on many real conversations.
On pay: it was never enough, but it was steady, and steadiness let her plan. On respect: it came from parents and students, rarely from the system.
“Respect is not given with the job. You earn it one child at a time.”
Her advice for young teachers: learn every child's name in the first week, and never shout at a child you have not first listened to.
