The public swimming pool in Peshawar has closed four times since March. Each time, the notice on the gate gives a different reason.

Staff said the main filter is older than most of the lifeguards, and replacement parts have to be ordered from another city. When it fails, the water turns cloudy within a day.

One filter, four closures

The pool also needs two trained lifeguards on duty at all times. When one is on leave, the pool closes.

A full filter replacement and a third lifeguard would cost less than the pool earns in one busy summer month, according to staff estimates shared with us.
