The service lane along the main canal road in Lahore reopened on Saturday afternoon after three weeks of repair work. Commuters who had been squeezing onto the main carriageway said the evening rush felt lighter almost at once.

Workers replaced a long section of broken surface and laid new drains on the low side of the road, where water used to stand for days after rain. Officials from the district roads office said the drains were the main reason the job took longer than planned.

“We fixed the water problem first, otherwise the new road would have broken again by winter.”

Why it took longer

Shopkeepers along the lane said business had dropped while the barriers were up. A tyre shop owner said most of his regulars had simply gone elsewhere and he hoped they would come back now.

The roads office said night-time patching on two more stretches will start next month, with work limited to 11 pm to 6 am.
